San Diego Lions 6.9.45
Orange County Bombers 11.12.78

July 12, 2008. - San Diego hosted their first home game of the season on a magnificent patch of wide green turf perfect for an open game of footy. Orange County arrived with a well stocked team and supporters, no doubt making the most of the perfect clear day close to the Pacific Ocean. It was a fitting setting for the continuation of two old rivals. The game began at the frantic pace as each team was determined to gain possession of the ball through the centre of the field.

A quick OC goal not long from the opening bounce was a warning to the home side that lapses in concentration would be swiftly punished.

San Diego tightened up their marking and a footy arm-wrestle ensued as all
players went hard at the ball. Some textbook football through the centre of the field saw the Lions bag their first with a Paul Hanton lead and goal. Late in the quarter, one of OC’s forward flankers snapped a missle from an impossible angle in the pocket, splitting the uprights directly in two. Yet, San Diego managed to put one more up before the siren, and after the first quarter the scoreline reflected the tight contest as both teams were locked at 2 goals 3 a piece.

Q1 SD 2.3.15 OC 2.3.15

American Rookie Matty Lilien was pivotal in his first full game in the ruck, as the
Lions tried to control the centre bounce. It still proved to be a scrappy game however, and OC were scrapping well, pushing the ball into their forward danger zone time and time again. With inspired Lions defensive pressure from Matty Rourke, Viking, and Jeff Blankman, the locals were able to counter-attack and set up numerous scoring opportunities themselves. With such a battle underway, scoring opportunities were precious indeed, and both teams struggled to take full advantage on the scoreboard. By halftime OC had capitalized on some strong attacking football to take an 8 point lead into the break.

Q2 SD 3.6.24 OC 4.8.32

Match day Coach Michael Cameron urged the boys to stay tight, go hard at the football, and move the ball with purpose. Schenka urged his boys to play with passion, and encouraged the veterans to guide and lead the many new faces on the footy field.
San Diego responded with their strongest quarter as veterans Schenka, Derf, Jacko, Donnie, and Hanto led the way in the third quarter. The contest remained fierce with some big clean hits keeping the crowd entertained. Strong goals from Brian O’Reilly and Donnie Lucero saw the Lions right back in it, and when Freddie kicked a long running goal fed smartly from the wing by Jack Cameron—who was streaking up and down the center of the field like the proverbial “bat out of hell”—the Lions had gained the momentum. OC fought valiantly under the Lions pressure and an opportunistic goal just before the siren tied the scores yet again, and set the scene for a great last term.

Q3 SD 6.8.44 OC 6.8.44

There was nothing between the teams as the final quarter kicked off, and at the ten minute mark both teams had scrapped for one behind each. In a testament to their deep line-up on the field, OC began finding their team-mates in space with good ball movement. With some good footy Orange County managed to kick the first couple goals of the quarter to regain the momentum. Getting a sniff of a rare victory against the Lions, the OC boys upped their intensity to keep the Lions on their heels and kicked away with a well-deserved victory, putting up five huge goals in the decisive final minutes . . . all the Lions could do was stare in disbelief as the game was seeming snatched from their clutches, regroup and make the commitment to train hard for the next contest.

Q4 SD 6.9.45 OC 11.12.78

A big thank you to umpires Paul Pietsch and Ed Gallagher, as well as all friends, family and supporters from both camps. It was a great sporting atmosphere and everybody got to see a physical, fair, hard-fought true blue footy contest.

By LionsAdmin @ 5:19 PM :: 126 Views :: 0 Comments

Dear fellow Lions and Supporters,

1. Lions vs OC Bombers

We play our next big 18-a-side game against our neighbours from Orange County, on Saturday July 12th.  We are looking for a huge supporter (and player) turnout, so please put this on your calendar!  We will be playing at the newly renovated NTC Park in Point Loma

Map to location here.

The game will start at noon, and we are trying to negotiate a curtain raiser game with OC to make sure everyone gets a good run on the day.  More to follow.

2. New Tuesday Night Strength and Conditioning Session

The Lions have negotiated a deal with Rehab United who will be running a 6 week Strength and Conditioning program for us at their facility.  The sessions will be every Tuesday night at 6pm from July 15 through August 19.  Total cost is $79 per person which is due on the first day of training along with your registration/release form which will be posted on the Lions home page shortly.  This is a great deal to get to work with a professional strength and conditioning coach in a top notch facility.  Email Brando brandon_s_blankenship@yahoo.com to let him know if you are planning to participate.

Co-Ed: NEW LOCATION!  Monday nights at Ski Beach (see website for directions) at 6pm.  Next Co-Ed game will be July 26th during the Metro tournament.  Time to be confirmed.

4. Metro tournament, Saturday July 26th
The final Metro hit-out of the year will all 3 teams play each other on the one day.  Exciting stuff.  So come on down and watch 3 games of footy.  The first game will start at 11am.  Location to be confirmed, but most likely it will be the usual, Doyle Elementary.

5. Flip Flop Formal, Saturday July 26th @ 7pm
It is time for the girls to dress up and the boys to get a dressing down (for not dressing right!).  So girls, dust off that fancy dress.  Lads, dust off that trendy suit.  And be sure to find yourself a fancy pair of flip-flops as Bob and Jan Bitmead have been kind enough to open the doors to the Lions for our chance to dress up and look snazzy for a night.  Note: flips flops are MANDATORY (no heels etc, you’ll damage the wood floors).  Cost will be ~$30-40 (still to be finalised), which includes food and alcohol!

6. Footy on Setanta
Sat @11pm Sydney vs. Collingwood (not live)

Have a great week!
