Lions overrun a gallant Golden Gate.
By admin @ 11:42 AM :: 609 Views :: 0 Comments

The San Diego Lions headed north for their second big clash of the 2006 season, which promised to be a good, tough encounter.

The Lions squad, which is continually growing due to some solid recruiting and a competitive Metro season, comprised of 28 players all ready for a challenging game against the Golden Gate Roos. The weather was getting hotter as the team prepared to take on a solid GG Roos team, which seemed to have a hundred players.

The Lions, with many new players to the team, and many new players to the game, were ready and at 2.15pm the game started. The GG Roos were on fire right from the first bounce, jumping the Lions in a fashion that they have rarely experienced, and heading into the first change with a 6 goal lead. A shell shocked lions were addressed by Coach Nicholas who urged the team to "step up and play Lions footy".

The second quarter saw a complete role reversal with Lions dishing out some of their own medicine. With 2 goals late in the quarter by the Roos, the half time break saw the Roos still ahead by 10 points, but now we had a game on our hands.

Coach Nicholas made some strategic positional changes and the team took the field to take the third quarter to the Roos, and that they did. The defense was strong, the mid fielders hit it hard and the forwards kicked away putting the Lions in a commanding position going into the final change.

The Lions pulled together and played some fine footy in the final stanza, unfortunately their kicking became a little erratic, but they continued to drive right until the final siren, which saw the Lions victors by 5 goals. Excellent defense lead by Blankenship, and supported by Heppekausen and Webb saw the Lions keep the Roos to 1 goal in the second half. Great efforts also were made by Liwanig, Pekenon, Russell and Shortill when they had their showing.In a weekend of comebacks, a great team effort saw the Lions turn around the 6 goal deficit in the first quarter to run out winners by 32 points.

Thanks to Barnsey and the Golden Gate footy club for putting on a great show. The footy was tough, competitive and beneficial for all involved. The after match functions were also well organised and well attended, let's hope this weekend remains a annual event!
