Dear fellow Lions and Supporters,
1. Lions vs OC Bombers
We play our next big 18-a-side game against our neighbours from Orange County, on Saturday July 12th. We
are looking for a huge supporter (and player) turnout, so please put
this on your calendar! We will be playing at the newly renovated NTC
Park in Point Loma. Map to location here.
The game will
start at noon, and we are trying to negotiate a curtain raiser game
with OC to make sure everyone gets a good run on the day. More to
follow.
2. New Tuesday Night Strength and Conditioning Session
The Lions have negotiated a deal with Rehab United who will be running a 6 week Strength and Conditioning program for us at their facility. The sessions will be every Tuesday night at 6pm from July 15 through August 19.
Total cost is $79 per person which is due on the first day of training
along with your registration/release form which will be posted on the
Lions home page shortly. This is a great deal to get to work with a
professional strength and conditioning coach in a top notch facility.
Email Brando brandon_s_blankenship@yahoo.com to let him know if you are planning to participate.

3. Training (click here to go to a downloadable July schedule)
Men’s: NEW NIGHT! Wednesday nights at Doyle Elementary is our new MANDATORY training night. Please keep an eye on the website for Thursday training nights (e.g.; Thursday July 3rd and 10th we have training at Doyle as well). If you have questions call Schenka, 734 223 6421.
Co-Ed: NEW LOCATION! Monday nights at Ski Beach (see website for directions) at 6pm. Next Co-Ed game will be July 26th during the Metro tournament. Time to be confirmed.
4. Metro tournament, Saturday July 26th The
final Metro hit-out of the year will all 3 teams play each other on the
one day. Exciting stuff. So come on down and watch 3 games of footy.
The first game will start at 11am. Location to be confirmed, but most
likely it will be the usual, Doyle Elementary.
5. Flip Flop Formal, Saturday July 26th @ 7pm It
is time for the girls to dress up and the boys to get a dressing down
(for not dressing right!). So girls, dust off that fancy dress. Lads,
dust off that trendy suit. And be sure to find yourself a fancy pair
of flip-flops as Bob and Jan Bitmead have been kind enough to open the
doors to the Lions for our chance to dress up and look snazzy for a
night. Note: flips flops are MANDATORY (no heels etc, you’ll damage the wood floors). Cost will be ~$30-40 (still to be finalised), which includes food and alcohol!
6. Footy on Setanta Sat @11pm Sydney vs. Collingwood (not live)
Have a great week! Your Lions Board.

June 21, 2008 - Lions lose at Golden Gate
San Diego Lions 48
Golden Gate
Roos 63
The Lions
traveled to Golden Gate on the weekend for a
much anticipated game against the Roos. The conditions were great for
footy, wispy clouds in the sky, bright sun, and a strong breeze blowing
diagonally across the oval which lasted the entire game.
The Lions won
the toss, but team captain Brendan “Freddie” McDonald elected to defend against
the breeze in the first quarter and the advantage was to the Roos. The
Lions were fielding a lot of new players and it was a test for the coaching
staff to get the Lions settled in the first quarter. On top of that there was a
wardrobe malfunction that had the Lions borrowing jerseys from Golden Gate! (Thanks
lads!) A few early injuries—including a knee injury to star forward
and Revo team member, Justin Valley—had the coaches scrambling, and Golden Gate
came out of the gates quickly, full of run and full of passion for the
football. In contrast, the Lions were second to the football, and found
it hard to find a rhythm. Rightfully so, the Roos took full advantage of
the wind, and the Lions slow start to take a 3 goal lead after the first
quarter.
Q1: SD 1.2.8 GG
4.2.26
In the second
quarter the Lions started to find their feet. They had the wind at their backs
and managed to peg back a few goals, thanks to some great work in the middle by
the Captian Freddy McDonald, and Lions debutant Brian O’Reilly, who had
“rucked” up for his first full-sided game of footy. Donnie Lucero was
stoic in defense, as were Brett ‘Viking’ Ullman, Jack Cameron and Steve
Simpson.
Q2: SD 3.4.22 GG
5.3.33
The third
quarter was a great tussle. The wind seemed to have been getting stronger
throughout the game, but calmed down a bit for the “premiership quarter”. The
Lions managed to kick two goals to the Roos one, but a persistent attack by the
Roos afforded them 5 behids as well, and so the quarter was nearly even. At
the end of the third the Lions were down by just ten points.
Q3: SD 5.4.34 GG 6.8.44
But as was the
case for most of the day, the Lions were flat footed, and second to the contest.
The Roos, in contrast, did a great job of running with the football and
providing options across the ground. The Lions scored the first goal early in
the quarter and followed up with a missed opportunity, resulting in a behind.
There was a feeling that the game was anyone’s, with the margin just now 3
points. A long drought followed, with a lot of scrappy play trapping the pill
near the wings and center area of the ground for what seemed to be ages. No
majors were posted until only about 7 minutes remained in the game. Then, as
the Lions remained flat, the Roos took advantage with some good running and strong
teamwork. They snapped three quick goals in succession and knocked the wind out
of the flagging Lions, who managed only to kick one more goal before the final
buzzer. In the end, Golden Gate won by 3
goals, and took hold of the Dusting-Bergman Cup.
Q4: SD 7.6.48 GG 9.9.63 It was a great
experience for the 10 new Lions who made the trip up to Golden Gate, and shows
that the Lions have much work to do over the next few weeks in preparation for
their next encounter against Orange
County. Full credit
is due to Golden Gate for a great game of
footy, and the Lions look forward to their next West Coast tussle.

Lions Come Out Roaring in Las Vegas!

Congratulations to all on a successful trip to Las Vegas!
The Lions traveled with 50+ players and supporters to Las Vegas on May 31st. In a historic first, the Lions played a competitive Co-Ed Footy match against the Gamblers. In the friendly match, in which the Lions "loaned" 5 or 6 players to the Vegas side, each side lined up with 9 players in a hotly-contested, skilled affair.
The combined LV/SD side won out in a squeaker. LV 5.7.37 def. SD 4.5.29
We hope this is only the first of many competitive Co-Ed games to come!
After the Co-Ed match the Lions men's team lined up against Las Vegas for the first true test of the season. . . With the mercury well above the 90 degree mark, it would truly be a test of endurance and fitness. However, with 35 suited players in attendance, the Lions were ready for the challenge. The Gamblers came out of the barrel firing true and drew first blood. However, it soon became a one-sided affair with the Lions up four goals at the Quarter siren. The boys never looked back and ran away with a comfortable lead throughout the affair.
SD 16.16.112 def. LV 6.9.45
Tune in soon for more detailed statistics and a proper match report!
The Lions board would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for the genuine hospitality of the Las Vegas Gamblers, who put on a great event and fed us after the test. We look forward to seeing you in September for our second hit-out here in San Diego, and we wish you best of luck in the coming season. You are truly a class club and a credit to footy in the West.

Jaguars get the jump on the Cougars in Metro Game #2
By LionsAdmin @ 7:51 PM :: 123 Views ::

|
Saturday- May 17th... The Jaguars have defeated the Cougars in a hard fought 109-90 victory in Metro Game #2.
|
The ball was bounced early Saturday morning, with the sun already fierce. The Jags seemed to be energized by the sun early and dominated the first quarter kicking a quick 5 unanswered goals. As the heat continued to rise, the Jaguars kept the momentum with strong footy all around the ground. Jezza was a force in the backline, moving the ball through the sure hands of Gibbo and Harves in the centre. Matty continued his impressive rookie season in the ruck, pushing down the ground to kick a couple of running goals, and Dan continued his strong play in the forward line. Making up for his absence in the Metro Game #1, Captain Blankenship was in stellar form, and by the time Bobby blew the whistle for halftime, the Jags had built a demanding 44 point lead. However, in true Lions spirit, the Cougars fought back hard in the second half behind their trusted veterans Viking, Nickel, JJ and Jeffo. Red was pivotal out of the centre as the Cougs began to find a rhythm missing in the first half. Big Richard was a beast in the forward line, kicking a game high 5 goals as the Cougars started to overun the tiring Jaguars in the final quarter. In the end, despite outscoring the Jags 10 goals to 6 in the second half, the Cougars ran out of time, victims of a big first half deficit. Once again, it was another skillful fast paced game of footy with a good turnout. Thanks to all who showed up!!
Once business was over on the footy field, it was time for players and supporters to indulge in a little pleasure. Brando hosted all for precious pies and beer, enabling those involved to limber up for a big night in Pacific Beach. It was monumental night in PB involving ping-pong piffing, salubrious singing, inappropriate dancing, sneaky hook-ups, and a smattering of cross-dressing and, of course, nudity. All in all, the Lions ticked all necessary boxes for a great night out!

Thanks to all those folks that helped make last Sunday (5/4) a very
successful day for the Lions. Our first Metro game for the year,
between the Jaguars and Tigers was most entertaining, with the Tigers
coming back in the last quarter to win by 17 points.
Also, Quiz Night
#1 at The Wit’s End saw some 30 Lions (and supporters) test their brain
power, some with success, some not so much. Either way, much fun was
had!
