1st ever Lions away game, Holywood, early April 1998
Yahoo, 10 years since our 1st away game!

So, a few weeks after getting whomped big time by LA, it was time to reciprocate by making the journey north. LA had been training at the stunning Woodley Park, home of bloody brilliant cricket grounds, with a bloody stupid policy of nothing but cricket. Poor old Jimbo Cooper had to scramble, I mean, LA's only a coupla hundred miles square feet, ey? What the, did he walk into the county office, and specify, a small, pot-holed, razor grassed field covered in dog excrement?
Several gutless bastards had snivellingly disappeared after the womping in our first game. My back had gone out, and I'd been off work and off my ass (arse) for 2weeks, couldn't move, but had to go along to make up the numbers. A chap by the name of Gary Green had called up, and yeh, he'd rock up for the game. Another interesting character was Johnno, a 45 yo American, who was an alcoholic drifter(unlike all us refined sorts) who just happened to be in the pub lately.
Greeny arrived a few minutes before the game. He shook my hand and threw up. This is what I normally expect from the ladies, but apparently he'd had a few. We got a burger for him, and he was ready to go! Johnno was given a quick tutorial, a team racked up, and we were ready to go. Except, Kiwi Dean, the umpire, was hypervenilating, and pacing back and forth with a case of Tourettes. The abysmal condition of the ground somehow had him believing he would be liable for several mill in liability, as he was technically in charge of the game. Screaming, yelling and giving my opinion of his nation persuaded him to get up n go.
Siren. Ball up, tap from LA giant to Rooter. FRIGGIN BAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Garry green had arrived! The game was a few seconds old, and Rooter was concussed! I beamed with pride at our new recruit. the Kiwi, gave Gaz a free coz Rooter had held onto the ball as he was annihalated. Boom, goal from the hey didddle diddle.
Wish I could tell you more. I was chewing on pain killers like a right wing talk show host. I came onto the ground for 5 minutes, the ball fell at my feet, I picked it up, handballed, and got off the ground, hppy to have a stat. LA kicked 24 goals again, but this time we kicked 11! A ten goal improvement in 3 weeks!
Cooper dragged us off to Aussie Bill's, a pub with no Aussies and no microbrews! The concussed Rooter held court channelling Klingon, like a traler-trash Edgar Cayce, draining pitcher after pitcher. Already I was hatching plans. He was definitely san Diego material.
Stay tuned, for more stories of that first year, as we celebrate 10 years of the Lions!
